Stewarding a Community Treasure

Bloomfield Prairie Lease Extended 15 years

Did you know that Dodgeville is home to an ecological gem that surrounds the Bloomfield Healthcare & Rehab Center two miles west of Dodgeville?

The 432.8-acre Bloomfield Prairie (the Iowa County Farm) is truly a remarkable community asset that can be enjoyed right here in Iowa County. The prairie is home to a wide array of grassland plants, birds and animals, including badgers, has a beautiful large pond and trout stream and is open to the public to explore and enjoy.

This prairie gem is a testament to the vision and hard work of Dave Ladd and a small group of like-minded local residents calling themselves the Iowa County Recreation and Prairie Restoration, Ltd.. Starting in 1998, they converted over-used farmland with severe erosion problems into high-quality prairie lands brimming with life and public uses.

With the future of the prairie hanging in the balance, the Prairie Restoration group turned to the Driftless Area Land Conservancy. Together they formed a creative plan to save the prairie and pay the County a market-based long-term rent.

Driftless and Prairie Restoration are pleased to report that their applications to protect the prairie through the USDA CREP program have been granted and will generate the means to sustain the prairie and fund the leases with the County for at least the next 15 years.

Driftless and Prairie Restoration look forward to our community using and enjoying the Bloomfield Prairie for generations to come.
