August News and Updates

August is National Make-A-Will Month! Many people have thought about leaving gifts in their wills to support nonprofits like land trusts. Those who let us know of their bequests become members of DALC's Legacy Society. And there's never been a better time! Right now, board member Mark Mittelstadt, one of DALC's founders, has generously pledged to donate $1,000 in honor of each new member of the Legacy Society. But, this only applies to the first ten new folks - and three slots have already been claimed! If you’re interested in joining the Legacy Society, learn more here. When you include DALC in your will, you are ensuring that special places in the Driftless will be protected forever.

2022 Annual Report

This year, we’ve reformatted our Annual Report to share highlight stories of 2022, featuring our three main goals as an organization: conservation, connection, and care. We've also moved our list of 2022 donors, volunteers, and other supporters entirely online. Take a look! You are also welcome to request a physical copy of the Annual Report to be mailed to you by emailing emilee@driftlessconservancy.org or calling our office at 608-930-3252.

Evenings Afield: Agro-Forestry - Where to Begin Agroforestry integrates trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems, producing a wide variety of benefits. It is especially well-suited for Driftless topography and can be done at any scale. We will tour the Savanna Institute's home farm and learn about the plans they have for using this beautiful 195-acre property to showcase agroforestry practices.

This is our final Evenings Afield event of 2023, so don't miss out! It will be held on Thursday, September 7th, from 6-8. Registration is required.

Notes From the Field When you work in land conservation in the Driftless, getting out in the field usually means visiting just about the most beautiful places imaginable. This August, I've been so lucky to have lots of events, gatherings, and visits that have taken me all over this gorgeous region in this gorgeously blooming month. With every sprawling bur oak in every restored savanna, every rocky hillside that's left me literally and figuratively breathless, every winding trout stream, every native bee on every native flower, I've been reminded why we do this work: so these incredible places will remain for every plant and animal and child of the Driftless to rely on and enjoy, forever. I hope you've had many opportunities to savor this beautiful month too, and to know that your support for DALC is building an amazing future!
