Nan Fey came to the Driftless Area when she was 11 years old when her family bought property here. The unique geological features and the way the land created a sense of intimacy enchanted her. Her love of this place is still alive as she continues to live on the property her parents bought.
When Nan decided to protect the place she loved with a conservation easement with Driftless Area Land Conservancy, there was talk about how a future trail might traverse the beautiful property. Nan felt that having a trail would be a good fit. She understood the value of a hiking trail from her experiences hiking many parts of the Appalachian Trail. She appreciated the comradery of the trail, the kindred spirits one meets, and the adventure of traveling from one point to another never quite sure what surprise might await you around the corner. It would be a wonderful opportunity to create a trail in the Driftless Area that would bring those things to this community.
This year, Nan Fey is one of the first landowners to welcome the Driftless Trail onto her property. A small group of landowners has joined her to be the champions who start this momentous project. The Driftless Trail is a footpath that wanders through the woods, prairies, and farms of Iowa County’s Driftless Landscape. As the trail breaks ground this fall, Driftless Area Land Conservancy would like to thank Nan, and all the incredible landowners, who have agreed to be a part of the Driftless Trail.
